How is Czech business doing in ESG? We present the results of the 2025 ESG rating
Czech companies are improving in measuring their greenhouse gas emissions, but they have gaps, for example, in biodiversity protection or tax transparency. These are some of the conclusions of the ESG rating of domestic companies, which has been prepared for the fourth time by experts from the Faculty of Business Administration of the University of Economics.
The structure of the questions in the categories copied the corresponding ESRS standards for large companies and VSME for small ones, according to which companies should start reporting ESG in the coming years. This year’s border between the Expert and Basic categories copied the legislative limits for large versus small and medium-sized companies expected in the summer, i.e. 1,000 employees. Next year, the border will probably shift again, because on November 13, MEPs approved setting it at the level of 1,750 employees.
According to the ESG rating, companies on average handle environmental (E) issues better than social (S) issues (interests of employees, customers and affected communities) or governance (G) issues (innovation management, business ethics, tax transparency). However, according to the evaluators, there has been a significant improvement in the S area compared to previous years.
The ESG rating statistics also show that the companies involved perform best in reporting on issues related to greenhouse gas emissions and energy management.
“With each passing year, we see evidence that companies are really good at managing these areas and are successfully incorporating the lessons of the 2022 energy crisis. Activities are gradually changing from legally mandatory, purely marketing and performative to activities with a real impact on both the environment and the prosperity of the company. An example is the initiative to shorten and redesign supply chains, which appeared in two of our top 10 large companies. This is both an activity that reduces emissions from transport, but also a very prudent approach in terms of the company’s resilience and long-term prosperity in the current unstable world,” says Ladislav Tyll, head of the Department of Strategy at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Economics.
The evaluators also recognize companies that, according to their research and methodology, best manage their impact on the environment and can prove it through verifiable data and meaningful measures. The ESG Excellence award in the Expert category was awarded to ten large companies and five SMEs, which were included in the Basic category.
